At first her parents didn’t notice the weight loss nor the constant need for water. But, when 11-year-old Julia* started wetting the bed, her parents brought her to the pediatrician and soon after, found themselves in the ER hearing the words “Type 1 diabetes.” The doctors and nurses whirled in and out of the room showing Julia how to do a fingerstick, pulling out insulin syringes and talking about blood sugar highs and lows. They heard words like ketones, A1c and glucagon and blankly nodded their heads. When they got home, confused and afraid, they realized they needed help. Within 3 months of working with Julia’s family, I had set up a healthy routine to ensure that Julia did not miss mealtime or daily injections. The family felt comfortable troubleshooting through high and low blood sugars and knew what to do to prevent the extremes. They had sick day protocol and were prepared for any virus or illness. Julia’s school nurse had my contact information, so she was prepared to handle diabetes in school. Mom and Dad even felt comfortable going away for a few days and leaving Julia with the grandparents once they were educated on how to manage diabetes and felt confident taking care of their granddaughter.
