About Ellie Kagan, CRNP, CDCES

As a nurse practitioner and diabetes educator, it is my privilege to care for those who live with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.  I began my career in the diabetes outpatient department at Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.  I am responsible for educating all newly diagnosed children and their families and caregivers, coaching families through blood sugar variabilities, and starting children on insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors. I am a certified pump trainer for Medtronic, Insulet, and Tandem. I also train school nurses to safely manage diabetes in compliance with state laws.

I served as a diabetes consultant for the Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) of Maryland for 8 years. My responsibilities included managing blood sugars and medication for adults with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in home health settings and diabetes education for all health care personnel at the VNA. I educated nurses and social workers at local hospitals with an emphasis on strategies to prevent re-hospitalization related to diabetes.

I am an advisor and research moderator for Seagrove Partners, LLC- an independent consulting firm concentrating on diabetes research and technology.

I have trained over a hundred school nurses relating to diabetes management in the school setting and was a guest speaker at both private and public-school conferences in Maryland

I believe that continued education is the ideal way to manage this lifelong condition.  When my patients are educated about the disease and are comfortable with treatment modalities, I see positive results with an increased ability to troubleshoot and make appropriate decisions. I am always looking for opportunities to contribute to our diabetes community and improve the quality of life for those living with diabetes.

When I am not providing diabetes care, you will find me enjoying time with my husband and 3 daughters in Silver Spring, Maryland.
